Time Management by Gus
Success in any field is dependent on many things. We certainly will be more successful if our work is something we love. Then, work can become play! A Game! Have you ever noticed how fast the day goes when you become engrossed in an exciting project? It's therefore important to spend as much of our work time as possible on the portions that are enjoyable while still being productive. Sometimes that means getting the routine work out of the way first and reward yourself with the good stuff. That requires planning and the proper use of our time. The following articles address this time management in more detail.
Time Management
By Gus
With the creation of the universe, God
gave humankind a miraculous gift. A wonderful gift which
cannot be seen or touched but without which there will be no
meaning in life. In fact without which it would be difficult
to imagine life. It is time!
God being kind and just gave this to all of us in equal
quantity. He knew that some of His children would be
wasteful. So He gave it in such a way that they would not be
able to waste all of it. He assured a continuous and fresh
supply of it. Each day He gives us a fresh supply of twenty
four hours or 1440 minutes or 86,400 seconds per day to each
of us—poor or rich, good or bad, man or woman.
We may have handicaps of education, money, and connections.
But we are not handicapped by time. It is given equally to
all. It is the most important ingredient in success. Use
your time wisely and nobody can stop you from succeeding.
Time management is the key to keeping your New Year
Resolutions.
How to use time wisely? Of course, by managing it wisely.
Here are a few tips to manage your time.
1. Eliminate Big Chunks of Wastage of Time: We are usually
Pound Foolish, Penny Wise. We jump red light to save a
fraction of second but before that we might have already
wasted hours in some useless activity. There are big chunks
of time which we usually waste—sleeping long hours, wasting
time in front of TV, gossiping, in drinking and dining
parties, etc. If you spend two hours each way in commuting
to office, you have to find some solution to it. Either
change office or residence or utilize the commuting time in
reading (if traveling by bus or metro) or listening to
useful audios.
2. Eliminate Wastage of Time on Irrelevant Activities: We
are usually not focused in our life. Not only we should have
a single goal in life but all our efforts and time should be
directed towards it. If you want to write a book, not only
you have to eliminate big chunks of wastage of time, but you
should also avoid irrelevant activities such as, may be, a
side business, politics, and involvement in activities of
various social activities which may be good in themselves.
3. Plan your Time: Planning is very important for time
management. One obvious benefit is that as you would never
put in your plan items of big chunks of wastage of time and
irrelevant activities, they would be eliminated
automatically! Write down your daily, weekly, monthly,
yearly, and may be even more long term plans.

TIME
MANAGEMENT? NO!
By Dr. Dorene Lehavi
Many people want to be coached to
manage their time better. I say NO! to that. You cannot
manage time anyway; it just keeps ticking away no matter
what you do.
What you can do is manage yourself based on the two concepts
I keep mentioning: self-knowledge and self-acceptance.
Following are four principles to maximize the time that you
have. They take time to incorporate into your life at the
habit level. Don't give up. Keep practicing.
1) GOOD ENOUGH
Accept that no human being is meant to do everything. We all
have our uniqueness; things we do better than others and
vice versa. Perfection is not a human condition. Cut
yourself some slack and adopt the concept of "good enough".
You can rework your resume 50 times. Is it really so much
better than a much earlier draft? You can shop for the
perfect dress endlessly? Wasn't the first one you tried and
liked as good as the 15th? How much time did you spend past
"good enough"? Demand higher standards of excellence where
it really counts.
2) SPECIALNESS
Concentrate on excelling in what you do well, what you would
enjoy doing better, and new areas you would like to learn.
Delegate, hire, share, partner with people who complement
you or can fill the needs you have in areas you don't enjoy
or do not know that well. Don't ever berate yourself for not
being able to do it all. Appreciate your talents and
excellence and flaunt them. They are you, yours and very
special. Let others have their specialness too. The results
will not only save time but enrich and free you.
3) ENERGY AND TIME
Know and honor your energy levels. Are you a morning person,
do you have an afternoon slump? Your time will be best used
if you pace the tasks you have to do based on this
knowledge. Do the most challenging at your peak energy time.
Build in your Joy Breaks (see last month's newsletter) both
as rewards for finishing a formidable task and to refresh
yourself at low energy periods.
4) FOCUS IN THE MOMENT
Develop habits that help you focus on what you are doing in
the moment. Do not allow yourself to think of what you have
to do next while you are doing what you are doing. Put a "do
not disturb" sign on your door and do not take phone calls.
By putting everything else out of your mind while focusing
on the task at hand, you will be using your time
efficiently. If you get stuck on something, take a break.
Move to something else, get the information you need to
continue, change scenery, stretch, whatever it takes, but
don't sit there stuck.
Note: The suggestions I make are not one dimensional or
simple. The questions I suggest you ask yourself have
multiple answers and may be different on different days. I
suggest you keep them all in a file or notebook and refer
back to them regularly. You will gain a lot if you do.
